The ‘Aurelius’ collection is the finest collection of King Edward VII postage stamps to have been offered at auction for many years, featuring a wealth of proofs, particularly colour trials, and probably the finest holding of mint mutiples of the 1½d. to 1s. values in existence.
Examination of auction catalogues from previous decades reveals the true rarity of the 1½d., 2d., 4d. and 7d. colour trials. The groups contained in the ‘Aurelius’ collection are to our knowledge probably the most extensive ever assembled in private hands. Famous collections such as those formed by Colonel Bates, Per Gjerding, Major Beaumont, Joseph Silkin, M.H. Stothert and Tommy Allen contain but a few examples, only the H.C.V. Adams collection, sold in 1956, included a comparable section.
Many of the large multiples offered here emanate from the collection formed by Cecil Shaw. The plating of many of these was done by comparing marginal markings of complete sheet skeletons held in the Brotherton collection at Leeds University.
We have endeavoured to include illustrations of as many items as possible in this catalogue. Scans of virtually all of the items not included here, as well as those illustrated in the catalogue, will be available until shortly after the sale date on our website www.grosvenorauctions.com. Lots so illustrated are indicated by the words ‘Photo internet’ at the end of the description.
