| 2364 | King George V: 191112 Downey Heads: Proofs: 1911 die 1A watermark crown 1d. carmine-rose, the famous and controversial perf. 14 (13.75 x 14) variety, superb with full original gum, very rare, it is believed that at most five examples exist, including the block of four (since divided and from which this example probably emanates) recorded and pictured in The British Philatelist (1915), volume VIII, page 31. Formerly listed as S.G. 327a but deleted and erroneously declared a fake, this stamp has recently been resubmitted to the R.P.S. and a new certificate (2002) has been issued stating that is a proof, it will be re-listed as a colour trial (with the similar currently listed trial in scarlet) by S.G. in the next edition of the Specialised Volume 2 catalogue. Photo. This mysterious stamp shows the bulging frame, particularly to the left of the crown (also known on an imperf proof - see Grosvenor sale 3 lot 323 and the Philatelic Review vol 6 no. 1) and was also the subject of an article by Alain de Cadenet in the 'Philatelic Review' vol. 5 no. 1' - 'there is a copy of a penny perf. 14 in the Palace [Royal] collection, (this also shows the characteristic bulge). It was a gift to King George V from Seymour Bennett, who was head of the stamping Dept at Somerset House.' De Cadenet also states that he had lamped a copy of this stamp -'it went plum coloured .. obviously a Somerset House printing', the stamp offered above also shows the plum reaction under ultraviolet light. Copies of these articles are included. |
